The weight of the manila envelope in my hands sends a shiver down my spine. It’s not particularly heavy, but the promise of its contents is enough to make me tremble with anticipation. The dimly lit office seems to grow darker as I tear open the seal, revealing the photographs and documents inside.

“Could this be it?” I wonder, feeling my heart pound against my chest. “Have I finally found the monster who killed Maryanne?”

“Could this be him?” I ask myself, studying the man’s features more closely. He’s wearing a uniform, and my pulse quickens at the sight. I’ve always been attracted to men in uniform, a fact that both amuses and disturbs me given my tumultuous relationship with my two mothers.

“Focus, Waverly,” I chide myself, shaking off the distracting thoughts. This isn’t the time to indulge in personal fantasies or dwell on family drama. I need to keep my mind sharp if I’m going to solve this case and bring justice to Maryanne.

As I pore over the documents, I notice a series of phone records that show the suspect making multiple calls to Maryanne in the days leading up to her murder. My breath catches in my throat as I realize the significance of this connection. The pieces are starting to fall into place, and for the first time in months, I feel like I might be on the verge of a breakthrough.

“Maryanne must have known her killer,” I whisper, my voice barely audible as I trace my finger over the phone records. “But why? What could she have had on him?”

The question plagues me, gnawing at the edges of my mind like a relentless itch. I can’t shake the feeling that I’m missing something crucial, some vital clue that will unlock the mystery of Maryanne’s murder and reveal the identity of her killer. But what?

“Think, Waverly, think!” I demand of myself, my desperation mounting with each passing minute. I’ve been haunted by Meadow’s murder for a decade, unable to escape the crushing guilt and loneliness that has come to define my life.
